If you’re relocating with kids — or planning ahead — this is the page I wish every Charlotte buyer read before they fell in love with a listing photo.
Here’s the truth competitors bury under “best schools” headlines: in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), assignment follows the residential address. Boundaries change. Magnets, charters, and private schools play by different rules. A Niche or GreatSchools score on a blog post is research context — not a seat guarantee.
This guide shows you the same public tools every household should use, the same way. No coded steering. No invented rankings. When you want a human pass on how school diligence fits your house hunt, book 20 minutes with me.

| What people confuse | What it actually is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Niche / GreatSchools rating | Third-party scores and parent reviews — useful as one input | Cite the site; don’t scrape; never treat as enrollment proof |
| “This neighborhood has great schools” on a realtor flyer | Marketing language about nearby campuses | Ask: assigned to which address? |
| CMS home-school assignment | District rule: your address maps to a home school (unless magnet/transfer/other pathway) | Use CMS School Finder + current boundary maps |
| NC DPI School Report Cards / accountability data | Official NC academic performance, growth, and related indicators | Read for context; attribute NC DPI; grades aren’t destiny |
Wendy’s rule: I will help you run the official lookup. I will not promise a school seat from a screenshot.
Fair Housing note: MakeTheMove presents the same school-research resources to every reader. We discuss school quality and public data consistently, without discriminatory intent, and without steering anyone toward or away from an area based on protected characteristics. Lifestyle and housing fit — not who “belongs” where.
Do this for every serious address on your shortlist — not once for the whole zip code.
Charlotte metro branding is messy. An address marketed as “Charlotte area” might sit in:
Always verify the district for that parcel. Suburb names on a listing do not equal CMS.
On the official CMS site (cmsk12.org), use the district’s School Finder / Find My School address tool (linked from registration and family resources). Enter the exact street address you might buy or rent — not a nearby famous school’s name.
What you’re checking:
If the tool and a map disagree in your mind, treat the district as source of truth and call Student Placement / Registration if you’re mid-transaction. CMS publishes contact paths on its Student Placement pages.
CMS publishes current-year student boundary maps here:

Use them to:
We do not redraw fake polygons on MakeTheMove. Official maps win.
For performance and growth context, go to North Carolina’s public sources:
What we will never do on this site: invent school rankings, fabricate letter grades, or publish a “top 10 CMS schools” list we didn’t verify from primary sources with a date stamp. If a number isn’t on DPI (or clearly cited from Niche/GreatSchools as their rating), it doesn’t belong here.
| Path | How it differs from home-school assignment | Relocator tip |
|---|---|---|
| CMS magnet / choice | Application windows, lotteries, priority rules, transportation zones | Learn deadlines before your tour weekend |
| Charter | Separate enrollment; not the same as CMS home assignment | Confirm seats, waitlists, and commute independently |
| Private | Tuition, admissions, and calendars on the school’s terms | Start early; don’t assume a public rating transfers |
| Reassignment / transfer | District processes with criteria and timelines | Never assume a transfer is automatic after purchase |
Home-school assignment is the baseline diligence. Everything else is an additional process.
| Area people name | Typical district conversation | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Matthews, Huntersville (Mecklenburg towns) | Often CMS — still address-specific | CMS Finder + 2026–27 maps for that street |
| Concord | Typically Cabarrus County Schools, not CMS | That district’s locator / maps |
| Fort Mill, SC | South Carolina public schools (not CMS) | SC district resources + state-line logistics |
| Ballantyne / SouthPark / Dilworth / Myers Park / South End | Usually CMS conversations inside Mecklenburg | Still run the address — feeder paths aren’t vibes |
If you’re comparing NC vs SC, read the neighborhoods hub and the Fort Mill comparison when live — schools are only one slice of the border decision.

Can a realtor guarantee which school my child will attend?
No. Assignment follows district rules and your address (plus any magnet/charter/private path you pursue). A good realtor helps you verify — not invent — the answer.
Are Niche and GreatSchools useless?
No. They’re useful third-party context. They are not CMS assignment, and they are not NC DPI. Use them after you know the assigned school for the address.
Do CMS boundaries change?
Yes. Growth, new schools, and Board actions can redraw lines. That’s why we point to the 2026–27 Student Boundary Maps and tell you to re-check before you rely on old blog posts.
Is Matthews / Huntersville / Concord / Fort Mill “CMS”?
Not automatically. Matthews and Huntersville are Mecklenburg towns that often involve CMS — still verify the address. Concord is typically Cabarrus. Fort Mill is South Carolina. Confirm the district every time.
